Options for Treating Mesothelioma
Each individual who is diagnosed with mesothelioma requires a personalized treatment program that takes into consideration several factors including how old the patient is, the progression stage of the disease, cell structure of the cancer, and other conditions. Time is of major concern when developing treatment programs as well as getting a proper diagnosis. The earlier mesothelioma is caught, the better one’s chances are for having a prolonged survival rate.
Traditional Methods of Treatment
The most common traditional methods used to treat mesothelioma are radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. Some patients require a combination of these.
Radiation
Radiation is a beam of high energy administered through radiation therapy. When used in conjunction with surgery, radiation attacks remaining disease after removal of tumors or affected tissue. When used for palliative care, radiation can help halt the spread of tumors, or control certain symptoms.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy involves the use of chemicals to treat cancers by preventing diseased cells from multiplying, as well as shrinking tumors. It is considered a viable option for patients who are not candidates for surgery. The most recent chemotherapy drug, and the first with FDA approval to specifically treat mesothelioma, is called Alimta. Administered in cycles, it is now considered one of the most effective of these type medications.
Chemotherapy is administered primarily intravenously, through the arm or hand and into the bloodstream. Thin tubes or catheters and ports are other means of administration. Side effects of chemotherapy occur when normal or healthy cells are damaged. It is important to get facts and explanations about all possible side effects and treatment.
Surgery
Surgery related to mesothelioma can be diagnostic, palliative, or curative. Diagnostic procedures include thoracoscopy, laproscopy, and video assisted surgery that allows experts to properly diagnose a disease. Palliative procedures are designed to alleviate pain and other discomforts. Curative procedures are intended to remove all of the disease, however there it is knowledge that traces will most likely remain.
With whatever treatment or combination of treatments is chosen, it is important for patients to maintain a healthy diet (and exercise if possible) regimen, get quality rest, and drink plenty of fluids.
